Hello judges! I’m sorry this took so long. It’s been a puzzle with a lot of moving pieces. Add to that, you guys are really good at this stuff, and all of you getting nominated so much was a bigger pain in the butt than expected!
So, here’s how this is going to work. You will each get a message from me listing your categories, all of the judges for each category, and how I contact them. From there, I’m letting each team decide how they want to work together. Get in touch, trade email address, set up somewhere you can all chat, come up with criteria you all think is important to remember when judging, what you do is up to you. All I ask is that you remember what the category is and that you do your best to focus only on the work and its merits. Your mission is to send me your team consensus for a winner and a runner-up. I ask that you try to shoot for Feb. 18th and 19th to give me and Draco time to sort them out and make all of the award banners.
Of course, if you have any questions or freak-outs, you can message me or comment here. We are all figuring this out together. Don’t be shy of afraid, you are here because I know you can do it. One more thing. Below is a breakdown of the categories and how many judges they have so far. I was shooting for 3 judges per team, but couldn’t spread you guys any thinner. All categories do have 2 judges, and I trust that we can make that work. At least nobody’s alone. Anyway, if you see a short category that you think you can fill a space for, or you find that you are working faster than you expected, I would be more than pleased to get you in touch with any team you’d like.

Just thinking ahead. For one of my groups, if our discussion doesn't leave an obvious best and second best, we were going to rate each story (on a scale of 1 to 100) and add them up. This could lead to ties. So, if we do get a tie, how necessary is it that we resolve it? Could we have two best or two second best?

I'm going to ask that you do your very best to choose only one winner and one runner-up. In my opinion, while it is acceptable to have ties in the voted categories, it is the job of judges to pick a winner. I know it is hard with so much excellent work done in this fandom, but those are the decisions judges have to make.
All of the artists know that judges have to go with their guts sometimes. Speaking as an author, I personally hold a judged award in much hire regard than a voted one. This is because I know that the judges did read every entry and made their choice very seriously based on merit and not just popularity. Everyone also knows that the winner for this year might not have won if before a different panel of judges. That's why we will encourage re-entries as the years go on. I'm trying to say, do you best. Believe me, I know it's a hard choice, but think of it this way... The artists are trusting us to make this decision. Even if everything comes down to a gut reaction we had to the work.
Thank you and good luck.

Just to be clear, voting would only happen if we could not agree based on our discussions. Totally discussing first. Voting after discussing and only as a last resort.

Sorry. By voted categories, I meant the public voting that we have going on along side the judging right now (or any voted award for that matter). I know how hard you guys are working to come up with the best possible choice for the winners.

So how do we submit our choices and summaries? It seems like it should be done in such a way that the other judges in the category can review it.

Come to a consensus among your team and then send the winners and comments to me. If you are having trouble getting in touch with your other team members let me know and I'll do whatever I can to help.

That was more of an "ahhh! What's your e-mail?" kind of a question but I've since found it.
Another question though. When should we have these done by? Also, you should have received Owning My Mistakes yesterday. I don't see "Results in" listed for this category but that might just mean you haven't had a chance to update this page yet. If not, please let me know.

Ahh... Ok. You guys can send me results in any way you usually get in touch with me.
As for Owning My Mistakes, no I have not received any kind of results for that one. If you could send your finished choices and blurbs to Becky I will get them. Any way you want to go is ok with me.

Oop, I meant Over Our Heads. We sent the results to headlineawards@gmail.com
Note: the voting awards form has the e-mail as healineawards@gmail.com, which didn't work.
The Over Our Head Award (Best Meta) 1. What Happens When Obi-Wan Doesn't Die by molly-may 2. Hercules Shipwright for Dad of the Year by Gilescandy
1. What Happens When Obi-Wan Doesn't Die is a meta that expresses an unpopular interpretation of Giles, and makes a convincing case. It analyzes Giles’ portrayal at key moments throughout the series, making an insightful and persuasive argument that Giles’ characterization in Season Seven was consistent with his characterization in the previous seasons. The essay illustrates the connection between that characterization and Giles' role as both Mentor and Fallen Mentor to Buffy.
2. I've fallen for a man I've never met. GilesCandy's essay, Hercules Shipwright for Dad of the Year, has convinced me that Herc Shipwright is the perfect man. Unfortunately it's also convinced me that he's perfect for Carolyn, not me, but I can live with that because he really is the perfect Dad for Arthur. This essay takes a podcast that, on the surface, is a comedy sitcom and shows us love. It explores Herc's character, as well as Carolyn's and Arthur's, through their relationships. It introduces us to a man who likes a challenge, is ready to go head-to-head with the woman he loves, but who will also provide a bedrock of support when needed. I hadn't met these characters before reading the essay – I only started listening to the podcasts after reading this meta – and yet, by the end, I had tears in my eyes for their happy ending. That's a great meta.

I thought I'd asked when the due date is, but I don't see that question here. So, when is the final due date?

The Change Award (Best Manip) 1. Hobbit Giles by smth-blue 2. Blue by Sueworld
1. Hobbit Giles At first glance Hobbit Giles is an odd but cute image. In fact my initial reaction was “Hobbit!Giles. Aww!” However the details reveal that it is much more than an interesting crossover idea. There are a number of surreal elements – the over-sized snail, the clock at the base of the tree, the weirdly fitting psychedelic eyes (fishes?) in the air, not to mention the fact that Giles the hobbit has no pipe to smoke – and they all suggest that Giles has dropped “down the rabbit hole.” With that I start wondering if this is a crossover at all. Perhaps it's a dream and Giles is a hobbit because there's nothing more English than hobbits. Perhaps it's Dawn's “Restless” dream. It could be … Damn, it could be many things. Awesome art always give ground for multiple interpretations.
2. Blue When haiku is written well, the poem is open to interpretation. It has at least as many meanings as it has readers. A good haiku is like a pebble sinking into the pool of the reader's mind, evoking associations from the depths of the reader's own thoughts.
Blue has an incredible sense of depth, a sense of three dimensions emerging from a flat plane. Giles, seated, leans forward and his hands stretch out even further, seeming to almost reach out of the image. The background, which in many images would read as flat, seems to have more than one level. Closest is the dark forest with those amazing shades of blue and green. Behind that the open area, where the birds are flying, has the same type of feel as the darker forest – they are both painted (drawn?) in the same manner – but the lighter area seems to open up into another world, almost as if the halo of light surrounding Giles were a gateway into another realm. Behind the birds is yet another level. This one seems to be more of a photograph, an image of sunlight beaming down through trees.
To my two co-judges, the birds and the different levels of the image suggest Giles as a shaman, a walker between worlds. To me, the lighter open area suggests a flame holding back the darkness or possibly a halo, a nimbus of light shining out from Giles' own soul. I could sit here and put interpretations to this image all day, but instead I will leave you with one final image. When I look at Blue, my cares sink away. I feel as if I'm a pebble dropping into a deep, dark, and still pool.

Please do your best to have the results to me by Feb. 18th so Draco and I can finish up the awards to be posted on the 20th. Thank you.
BTW, for any other judges reading the above and freaking out... These are very in-depth examples of comments. If you only feel comfortable writing one or two lines about why you liked the work, that will be excellent, too. No worries.
